Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)?
The Community Supported Agriculture model creates a mutually beneficial, direct relationship between the farmer and the consumer.  The consumers (often called a share-holders or members) pre-purchase a “share” of the produce the farmer plans to grow in a single season, thereby providing the farmer the capital necessary to purchase seeds, supplies, and cover operating costs.  In return, the farmer provides each member with a portion of what is produced, thus providing extremely fresh, local food to the membership.  The CSA model allows for refreshing transparency in the production of food and tends to encourage organic and sustainable on-farm practices.

Where is the garden?
Singer Hill CSA Garden is a landless organization – we don’t own any land, we don’t have a barn or even a greenhouse.  Rather, we enlist local community members in Oregon City, Milwaukee, and Gladstone to allow us to use their backyards to create mini-farms.  We provide folks who allow us to use their properties with a share of the vegetables and plenty of access to their farmer – allowing for educational opportunities and “hyper-local” food.  We have established these relationships for the 2009 season; please let us know if you are interested in donating your backyard for the 2010 season.

Who are the gardeners?
Our team of gardeners are: Mo McKenna, Jessica Dean, Mike and Brooke Sump, and Max Floyd.  By purchasing a share, you are not only doing something great for the environment, you are also helping to create jobs and a new generation of farmers.

How is Singer Hill Café affiliated with Singer Hill CSA Garden?
Phil and Vicki Yates of Singer Hill Café provided the concept and “seed money” for the CSA Garden.  Singer Hill CSA Garden uses the café as a home base for our community of gardeners and members.  You can purchase your share from the Singer Hill Café baristas; meet with the gardeners at informational meetings at the Café; and pick up your share at the Café.
